The RMS Consortium is excited to announce a workshop led by Dr. Emilie Connolly, Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Fellow in History and Native American Studies. These workshops are designed to introduce our RMS-affiliated postdocs and junior faculty to the Dartmouth community. While our undergraduate students are the intended audience, everyone—including other faculty and postdocs—is welcomed to join.

This workshop will consider the relationship between Indigenous dispossession and the transition to capitalism in the early United States. We will discuss the treaty process by which federal commissioners acquired Native lands, the ways that Native peoples were compensated for ceded lands, and the impact of this compensation on both settler and Native societies.
