Aseel Najib is a historian of early Islam and the late antique Near East. Her research and teaching focus on law and empire, the environment, and women and gender. Her current book project, Law and Conquest in Early Islamic History, examines the legal theory of post-conquest resource extraction and governance, situating it within the political, social, and fiscal conditions of the regions where it took shape. 

At Dartmouth, she teaches courses on early Islamic history, Islamic law, and conquest and empire. Before joining the History Department, she was the Abdallah S. Kamel Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale Law School.
