Elijah Wald will present his keynote address, "My Culture, Right or Wrong: Thoughts about Music and Power" as part of the Dartmouth Conference, "The Power of Song: The Cultural Politics of Singers Around the Globe."

When we describe a style or artist as authentically representing a culture, we tend to mean it as a compliment. But authenticity is not in itself, a virtue: something can be authentically harmful, unpleasant, or inept. Any serious exploration of musical culture requires that we recognize the complexities of both music and culture, and the ways music can express a commmunity's prejudices, flaws, and inequities along with its virtues–not only the power of music, but the music of power. Part of that process is exploring your own prejudices, flaws, and inequities, and our own relationship to music and power.
