The Professor of History discusses her just-published book Consistent Democracy: The "Woman Question" and Self-Government in Nineteenth-Century America (Oxford, 2023). Described as “sweeping,” “sparkling with insights,” and “required reading for all those with a stake in democracy’s future,” Butler's book places women and their political rights at the center of American democratic history.
