The History faculty at Dartmouth College pursues an integrated mission: to offer inspiring liberal arts instruction while conducting advanced historical research. Connections between the department’s curriculum and its varied research programs assure that faculty, students, and post-docs regularly collaborate on the cutting edges of contemporary historical scholarship.

Field-Shaping Scholarship

Faculty scholarship, while consistently excellent, ranges widely by field and method.  Consult the biographies of the “People” section of our website to learn more about individual activities and accomplishments.  There you will find profiles of regular faculty, of visiting instructors, of post-doctoral fellows who join the department for a fixed term, and of honored emeriti, who remain engaged with the vitality of History as practiced at Dartmouth College.

As a supplement to individual profiles of ongoing scholarship, we offer three “Research” sections, accessible through the headings to the left.  Use these portals to:

  • learn more about faculty-led research conferences, reading groups and symposia, and how these bring acclaimed historians from other institutions to our campus;
  • survey the many opportunities for undergraduate research and sample what has been produced in recent years;
  • explore funding opportunities for undergraduates and post-docs who wish to join Carson Hall’s varied research endeavors.
