Professor Klooster specializes in the history of the Atlantic world (15th-19th centuries). He has written several books including Revolutions in the Atlantic World: A Comparative History (New York University Press, 2009), (co-editor with Wayne te Brake) Power and the City in the Netherlandic World, 1400-1700 (Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2006), Illicit Riches. Dutch Trade in the Caribbean, 1648-1795 (Leiden: KITLV Press, 1998) and The Dutch in the Americas, 1600-1800 (Providence, RI: The John Carter Brown Library, 1997).
