Title: A Medicated Empire: The Pharmaceutical Industry and Modern Japan
Synopsis: Timothy Yang explores the history of Japan's pharmaceutical industry in the early twentieth century through a close account of Hoshi Pharmaceuticals, one of East Asia's most influential drug companies from the late 1910s through the early 1950s. Combining global histories of business, medicine, and imperialism, Yang's talk shows how the development of the pharmaceutical industry simultaneously supported and subverted regimes of public health at home and abroad.Timothy Yang is an associate professor in history and the interim director of the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Georgia. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2013 and his A.B. from Dartmouth College in 2003. His recent book, which is the subject of this talk, was a co-recipient of the 2022 Hagley Prize for best book in business history.
